Where the hell is the next update?
First, I need to apology to all people who bought the game already,
that I haven't posted anything for a long time. I’m sorry for that.
Please let me explain because I want to be honest:
The last 7 month, I had absolutely no chance to continue to work on Union Bytes Painter and it has multiple reasons.
- Main Job
I have a fulltime main job with 2 h commute to and from work. I work in a Laboratory and it’s sometimes really exhausting with a lot of time pressure. - Family
I have 2 Kids; the youngest just turned two, and he never let me leave his side once I came home. This takes a lot of my free time, though I love to spend time with him.
My wife also started to work again, so I need to do much more in the household and look after the kids. - Result
The result of all this and a few other small things ends in fatigue.
As soon as my Kids sleep, I go mostly to sleep as well, because I can’t keep my eyes open anymore.
I have days I even can’t turn on my computer because I have a lot of other stuff to do.
But Union Bytes Painter in its current form, is absolutely useable, I also use it from time to time.
I know there are still a few bugs in it, and I want to fix it and I will work to version 1.0 in the future. But I can’t promise a lot of new features currently.
I recognized, time flies and 24 hours a day are not enough.
So, currently I just can ask for your patience.
AMD Driver problems
Because I got a lot of feedback, that there is a problem on some systems with AMD cards, I tried to investigate on it.
I got a few reports that Union Bytes Painter doesn’t start properly on some AMD cards, after the GODOT logo it just crashes.
First, I tried to give out a debug version with the GODOT internal debug log system, but it didn’t help.
Then I extra bought an AMD Radeon™ RX 7600 for over 300 €, to find out, that it starts without problems with the newest driver. ☹
So, after wasting so much money, I still don’t know what the problem could be.
As long as I can’t reproduce the error it will be hard to fix it.
Maybe I need to write my own log file and debug system.
A user mentioned, that his problem appears only on Windows 10, when he switches on the same system to the Linux version it works. It may be combination from OS, Driver, and some other software or the .Net Framework.
I’m deeply sorry, but currently I don’t know how to solve it.
Thank you all very much.
Kind regards

As you say, the software is completely usable in its current state. I'm using it for my game projects without any issue, and the results are amazing!
Don't feel bad in any way. Ultimately, you don't owe people anything and the price for the software, even in its current state, is still great value. Of course I'd love to see more stability, bug fixes, improved usability, and new features, but it's much better to know that the developer is happy in life.
It would definitely be nice to see an open source version, or at the very least an option to download the project files so that the community can make tweaks to functionality and build their own version, and even submit for review. There are a few features (like masks) where it's clear that a bit of extra work would turn it from usable to great.
Either way, thanks for the awesome software, and I'll share my games on the page when they're done 😎
Hello, do you have a chance to share this software as open source? You have developed a very nice tool. It is a pity that you cannot spare time for it and it is wasted. I think it can come to good places with an aseprite-style licensing policy. Of course, you need time and people who will be interested.
Cheers for the update! The app is amazing and I use it daily.
Edit: just saw this is from half a year ago lol. Nevertheless, great tool you've made here.
:(
Thanks for the update post! I only come back to check for updates every so often, but it's always nice to see that something awesome like Union Bytes is just in limbo due to life and not dead. Kids, especially young ones can certainly bring life to a halt for a few years. Thankfully classic art styles like what Union Bytes is working with is timeless.
Just wanted to update you, that the windows version works on my computer now. It’s been two months since I last tried, and on a lark I gave it a shot. The AMD driver has updated few times since, also windows, so… eh, something fixed the issue for me.
Thank you for all your hard work!
Take your time and take care of yourself. <3
Hey, take your time :) Even if you never ever release anything else in regard to it, it's ok, because you already made something great and as you said: the software is useable, it's here, it's available for usage!
A 2 hour commute sounds like torture to me. I work from home and I would go crazy if someone forced me to stay away from my dogs for that long. Especially without pay and just for getting to the damn job.
When buying an early access product, especially at that low a price, there's always the risk of the dev not being able to mantain it as originally intended. That's fine.
If you do find time to work on it: A smooth, polished experience is worth much more than a ton of new features anyway. Take care of yourself :)
Hey not problem! there are many people who trying to learn pixel 3D art these modern days. So UPP going to be a good tools this the next future? ... well I hope you find a good time to make the 1.0 release vertion.
Your honesty is much appreciated! I’ve got family that work in labs so I’ve seen how tired that can make people. Thanks so much for all the work you’ve done so far! If you’ve gotta put development on pause (whether that be temporary or indefinite), then that’s what’s gotta get done.
I would suggest that if you do plan to end development, to allow your source code to be open. I imagine a lot of people could benefit from community development on this tool. Myself included. But of course it’s your project so if not that’s your choice
Thank you for the heads-up. Hope you'll find time to rest and breathe a bit. All the best.
